Environmental concern, reduction of SOx and NOx emissions, is driving large changes in the types of liquids used as fuels for marine engines. This is leading to the search for liquid fuels which will dramatically reduce or eliminate polluting emissions. Alternative fuels under serious consideration and growing use include, LNGs (Liquid Natural Gases), Methanol and Ammonia.

There are challenges in pumping these liquids:

  1. All have very low viscosities and are non-lubricating
  2. Involve higher system pressures
  3. Are more volatile resulting in explosive risk assessment
  4. Some are more toxic than the tradition heavy fuel oils.

The Hydra-Cell® pumps seal-less design, hydraulically balanced diaphragms delivering high pressure performance addresses all the points above, meeting the challenges of the Marine industry.

ATEX certification from an independent notified body ensures that the Hydra-Cell pump is safe to use in classified explosive zones.

Reliability, easy minimal servicing, adaptability and zero leakage are all important attributes a pump should have for marine service. Hydra-Cell seal-less simple design ensures compliance to all these attributes.

Hydra-Cell industrial marine pumps are able to handle the low-sulphur diesel fuels required by new environmental regulations, that are thin and non-lubricating. Moreover their viscosity further reduces as they get hotter. Hydra-Cell’s seal-less design is the optimum technology for handling these new fuels in marine industry pumping applications, and keeping them safely contained. Energy and installation costs are also saved as other pump technologies in the marine industry may require expensive fuel cooling units to keep the viscosity of the fuel high enough not to cause problems.

All dynamic seals leak a small amount. Hydra-Cell's seal-less design keeps the ultra low-sulphur fuel safely contained. With no leakage, there is no need for equipment to monitor fuel leaks.

Emission control regulations also apply directly to the exhaust gases of marine engines. Urea, seawater and lime slurries are among the control chemicals reliably delivered to the exhaust by Hydra-Cell pumps.

With accurate virtually pulse-less metering capabilities Hydra-Cell Pumps are used for chemical dosing also.

High pressure capability and smooth flow, along with seawater compatibility have led to the widespread use of Hydra-Cell pumps in reverse osmosis systems on ships and offshore rigs for producing drinking water. The pump can also run dry, so an operator’s mistake will not damage it.

Raw seawater is often used in deck wash-down and other cleaning operations at sea. Seal-less Hydra-Cell pumps can handle it with minimal filtration, can provide effective discharge pressure for cleaning, and also offer several drive options to simplify installation.

Many projects have been carried out with DNV certification and the Hydra-Cell pump technology s currently going through ABS design approval.
